Abstract

This research aims to identify the resident’s perspectives concerning the development of smart tourism destinations, considering the use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT). Smart tourism destinations are understood as innovative territories based on cutting-edge technology, capable of providing significant tourism experiences and improving residents’ quality of life. A systematized review of the literature was carried out to highlight the main theoretical approaches to the residents’ perceptions and attitudes in the context of smart destinations. It is inferred that residents’ perceptions of tourism impacts (i.e., economic, socio-cultural, environmental, and political) can be positive or negative, and are influenced by using ICT on smart tourism destinations. ICTs are understood as cross-cutting factors influencing these perceptions and overall residents’ satisfaction, which can support the further development of smart tourism destinations. Finally, since the residents make up the social capital of the local community, they should play a critical role in the planning and governance of smart tourism destinations.
