Abstract
Police relations in the United States have been under increased media scrutiny as a result of a number of controversial cases that implicate racially based motivations to numerous police actions. Provided is an overview of numerous incidents that have drawn public attention around the nation. After this, developments in response to these incidents are provided, including the emergence of the Active Bystander for Law Enforcement (ABLE) Project and, even more important, the introduction of H.R.7120, otherwise known as the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act of 2020. The impact and influence of external minority community members in examining police-community relations are also discussed. Lastly, implications for minority police officers, particularly African-American police officers, are considered.
