Abstract

Improvements in technology have resulted increasing numbers of children surviving from the previous fatal conditions. Advances in the use of long-term mechanical ventilation, safely at home, changed the clinical practice in patients with chronic respiratory failure. The awareness of the physiologic rationale of chronic respiratory failure, the advancements in new ventilator equipment and modes, and the knowledge of the invasive ventilation-related complications among physicians led to the widespread use of non-invasive ventilation (NIV).
