Abstract
Pelvic organ prolapse (POP) is a highly prevalent disorder, which decreases the quality of life of women significantly. As a result of an aging population, the prevalence of women with POP will increase notably from 3.3 million to 4.9 million over the next 40 years. Surgical treatment of vaginal apical prolapse can be achieved through a variety of vaginal or abdominal approaches. Abdominal sacral colpopexy is a well-accepted and durable repair for apical vaginal prolapse and considered the procedure of choice as symptoms of the vault prolapse are relieved and the vaginal function is maintained or restored with minimal changes to the vaginal anatomy and function. Intraoperative and perioperative complications are uncommon in the open colpopexy procedure. When comparing open sacrocolpopexy versus minimally invasive approaches, both groups demonstrated similar vaginal support and functional short-term results.
