Abstract

Binge eating refers to eating an unusual large amount of food coupled with experiencing a loss of control over eating. Although various methodologies have been used to assess binge eating and its momentary antecedents, ecological momentary assessment (EMA) has been most influential recently, as it examines these states in daily life and thus provides the most naturalistic data. EMA results showed that not only negative affect/stress, dieting, food craving/hunger but also cognitive states (e.g., executive functioning), physical appearance/body dissatisfaction, and external context precede binge eating in daily life. Reported consequences of binge eating are negative affect and compensatory behaviors. Apart from reviewing the existing literature on antecedents and consequences of binge eating in different populations, we discuss future directions for research and clinical implications.
