Abstract

This paper focuses on teacher education in Brazil, Mexico, Portugal, and Spain. Taking a comparative perspective, we look at key turning points and the influence of transnational agencies in shaping the landscape of policy development. While the four countries differ in many respects, they face common challenges, such as the status of the teaching profession and how to provide appropriate and varied responses with regard to professional teacher learning. The issues analyzed include the external impetus for change in teacher education, the complex situation of the teaching profession, as well as current challenges and tensions. The chapter concludes with implications and future directions.
