Abstract
Women in Colombia have been the heart of music. Recent itinerant researchers have pointed out the invisibility women have silently suffered in music. A double process of invisibilization has taken place: the representations of women through multiple strategies, which obfuscate their presence in music, and music as a neutralization device, which covers music itself as a second-class cultural product. This chapter has four sections: the first section is an introduction about the mode of access. The second section is a presentation of the feminist theory of Miranda Fricker on epistemic injustices from which music can be understood as scenario of women struggles. Section three focusses on the research about women in music to give account of its actual perspectives and future possibilities to unveil and understand women’s experience. The last section untangles the process of invisibilization through the almost forgotten story of Maruja Hinestrosa. This philosophical text, therefore, restores the place of women who have given their hearts to Colombian music and recovers the untold narratives of women’s resistance in music space.

It is very important here to point out the work of women focused on Afro-descendants’ music, mostly in the Departments of Chocó and Antioquia. Understanding what happens to women in music connects with the invisibilization of Afro and indigenous minorities. It is no accident that celebrations (joyful and sorrowful) in Colombia are permeated with African rhythms, because these merged with indigenous and Spanish music.

There have been investigations into music education in Bogotá (Gouberth-Burgos et al., 2009), the situation of professional education in Colombia (Cárdenas-Soler & Lorenzo-Quiles, 2013), about the history of music education in Colombia (Barriga-Monroy, 2014) and about specific aspects of arts and music education (Salazar-Hakim, 2014; G. P. Zapata-Restrepo & Niño-Morales, 2018). But the invisible role of music teachers is hardly ever mentioned, and these hermeneutical epistemic injustices need to be made visible.
