Abstract

In urban regeneration processes, increasing attention is being drawn to taking the participatory actions at the local scale with the involvement of the local community. Addressing community levels of place attachment has been considered as one of the meaningful factors for a successful renewal process. The study focuses on the potential of urban courtyards acting as the closest environment offering community contact with nature and daily interactions with their neighbours. Specifically, courtyards representing the closest residential area may be also identified with residents’ memories and experiences referring to their home and family. The chapter focuses on the importance of place attachment within the participatory regeneration process of small-scale urban spaces. The analysis is based on a qualitative research approach regarding the selected case studies in six Polish cities. Promoting local leadership, the sense of community and collective involvement through participatory methods enables to address place attachment to urban courtyards.
