Abstract
Bosnia and Herzegovina has one of the highest youth unemployment rates in Europe, and has experienced a steady decrease in the number of enrolled secondary school students with most young people attending vocational-technical education. Several scholars have analysed the role of apprenticeships in increasing the quality of vocational education and training (VET), the employability of graduates and the effective transition of adolescents into adulthood. This chapter shows that apprenticeship remains one of the key challenges in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The country has continuously tried to improve its VET system and more recently has opted for the introduction of dual education. The chapter provides an overview of the criteria of the European Framework for Quality and Effective Apprenticeships to evaluate the potential and challenges for the introduction of these criteria into the VET system. It also provides examples of the successful application of these criteria in different parts of the country and offers some policy recommendations.
