Recreation Planning and Management

The Palgrave Handbook of Urban Development Planning in Africa

Abstract

This chapter presents evidence on trends and status of recreation and physical activities in African cities whose management is further analysed. A critical assessment of specific theories, research designs, planning approaches and outcomes studied is done. Published peer-reviewed articles, commissioned reports and academic theses on recreation and physical activity planning pertaining to urban areas in Africa were the focus of the study. Published articles, reports and theses on recreation planning were therefore searched in electronic databases using specific keywords. Out of the 120 articles that were initially reviewed, twenty-one publications were found appropriate and selected. The selection was based on sample characteristics or nature of the study, study type, data collection method, study focus, findings, conclusions and recommendations. This proved useful for deeper conceptual, methodological and contextual analysis. From the reviewed literature, several observations were made, findings arrived at and conclusions drawn.
