Abstract
2021 has proved to be one of extraordinary challenge for Canada and for the world. The COVID-19 pandemic has intensified both long-standing weaknesses and ushered in new challenges in the global international economy and in Canadian domestic policies. At the same time, the global climate change crisis has become ever more urgent. This edition of Canada Among Nations examines events over 2021 and prospects for the coming year, with a focus on Canada’s position in the global political economy. This introductory chapter examines the economic and political implications for Canada of an international order fragmenting under faltering U.S. leadership, the challenge of a rising China, and inadequate institutions for global governance.
