Abstract

This chapter considers the implications of rapid urban growth in low- and middle-income countries with a focus on growing population inequities that demand swift policy attention. After setting the context in terms of definitions and trends, urban growth management is discussed including the challenges of urban governance and strategic urban planning. Key urban population policies are described related to family planning, youth, aging, and migration, with an emphasis on anticipating population needs and innovating solutions to better protect and promote population health and rights. The consequences of rising health inequities within urban settings are discussed including reduced prospects for meeting the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Framed as a social justice issue, the urgency of redressing these inequities is emphasized. Needed actions include strengthened urban governance and planning, and the systematic collection of disaggregated data that counts invisible populations – most notably those living in informal settlements lacking social protection and access to basic services.
