Abstract
Understanding the pathways to violence has traditionally taken a cross-sectional approach, focusing on various intra- and interpersonal factors. Violent behavior, however, typically has a number of behavioral precursors, and the pathway to violence should also be observed and analyzed. This chapter provides an outline of two leading methods of analyzing violent episodes. Crime Script Analysis, perhaps the most commonly used timeline method, is outlined in relation to various violent crimes. Then, the more recent Behavior Sequence Analysis approach is outlined with reference to various forms of violent and homicidal crimes. Finally, the newest timeline method, Waypoint Sequencing, will be outlined to provide readers with a streamlined method for faster temporal analysis. Readers will be provided with a clear working understanding of the methods and how to apply and use them in everyday life and research.
