Abstract
While patients with schizophrenia are more vulnerable to victimization than the general population, prior evidence also found that they are more likely to engage in aggressive and violent behaviors as compared to their healthy counterparts, particularly during the prodromal stage of the illness. However, despite these data, most of the previous research on the topic has been performed retrospectively, mainly among patients in the chronic stages of schizophrenia, and often after they had engaged in aggression and violence. There is, to date, a scarcity of data on the topic among at-risk for psychosis individuals, precluding the development of any prevention strategies despite their high effectiveness at this developmental stage. Given this knowledge gap, we aimed through this chapter to review the existing literature on the prevalence rates, the underlying mechanisms, the risk assessment tools, the prevention and intervention strategies regarding violence in the at-risk for psychosis population.
