Abstract

While the COVID-19 pandemic has been a worldwide challenge, the impacts on already marginalized groups have been profound. We use virtue ethics – specifically the virtues of compassion, solidarity, and justice – to identify policy approaches used thus far and to identify further steps needed to improve responses for especially marginalized groups. Virtue theory and other ethical frameworks are briefly discussed. Examples of policies (primarily U.S.) that have been implemented are provided and identified within the context of compassion, solidarity, and justice. Discussion is aimed at further supporting the frame of virtue ethics within policy-making, in general, and for pandemic response, in particular.
