Abstract
In response to the widespread claim that “there is no alternative to capitalism,” significant discussion and debate have arisen in recent years concerning whether or not Marx had a distinctive understanding of the transcendence of capitalist value production, and whether or not that understanding takes on a new importance for our time. Although Engels’s contribution is often bracketed out in these discussions, this chapter corrects that by exploring his views on cooperatives, the state, and value production in a future socialist society. I pay special attention to whether or not Engels further developed Marx’s conception of post-capitalist society. The chapter concludes with a brief discussion of how Engels’s views on these issues informed some of the major debates about the meaning of socialism among twentieth-century Marxists.
