Abstract
This paper presents a review of e-learning system success models published between 1992 & 2019. Prominent models that focused on e-learning systems success, information systems success, e-learning system quality and user satisfaction from mainly open online journal articles, conferences and book chapters were identified and critiqued. The multidimensionality and interdependence of Information system success factors teethed arguments amongst various role players in the field. We observed that early research in the field of information system success attempted to combine a process model and a variance model into one framework thus leading to confusion in interpretations and implementation. On the other hand, most researchers focused on a single “chosen” variable than to comprehensively test associations of all the model constructs. Therefore, we believe that there are vital gaps that need to be filled in the e-learning system success field; notably, the previous success measurements did not deal with aspects such as voluntary system use versus mandatory system use. Other factors such as culture and cognition may also have a bearing on the e-learning system success. The paper concludes by highlighting relevant success measures from the existing e-learning system success models and suggests new perspectives that we believe are crucial system success measures. Future research work will concentrate on collating relevant system success measures to construct a more comprehensive e-learning system success model.
