Abstract
Climate change adaptation and mitigation, and its impact on the fisheries value chain, is an ongoing discourse for fisheries. The mitigating effects of climate change directly affect fisherfolk, especially in Small Island Developmental States (SIDS) in the Caribbean, as they occupy coastlines that are exposed to natural weather disasters such as storms and hurricanes. Consequently, these natural disasters negatively impact not only fisherfolk, but also their fishing equipment as boats and equipment may become damaged. Once fisherfolk are unable to ply their trade, the catching, selling of catch, and processing of fish stock are all affected. This, in turn, worsens the social and economic conditions under which fisherfolk live and work. This can have far-reaching effects on their ability to provide a decent livelihood for their families, the development of coastal communities, and the overall profitability of the local agricultural/fishing industries in the Caribbean. For this reason, the adaptation and mitigation of climate change events must be examined closely in the context of the fishing industry to alleviate economic hardship within the industry, through a discussion on social change within fisheries. If this is accomplished, it can help fisherfolk to maintain and improve factors that can impinge on the value chain.
