Abstract

Many associations and movements of migrants and ethnic minorities have sprung up in Europe since the end of the 1980s. They demand access to rights and full citizenship, and the topic of immigrants’ political and social participation has been attracting the attention of European researchers. This chapter concentrates on the case of Italy, and aims to analyze the relationship between immigration and social change on the specific topic of citizenship. We look at whether and how the various forms of participation in which immigrants and their children engage, from the largely top-down (promoted by the country’s institutions) to the mainly bottom-up (under the initiative of the immigrants themselves) represent a force for promoting a reawakening of the citizenship movement in its various facets. We analyze the topic of participation separately for immigrants and for their children because, as we shall see, the features of their mobilization differ in several ways. The present analysis draws on a review of the main literature on these topics, and on the author’s own research.
