Abstract

The paper describes a brief evolution history of non-circular gears started from the 14th century, the main gear parameters and 5 models with non-circular gears from BMSTU mechanism collection. The authors compare different calculation methods for a complex profile of a non-circular tooth and present innovative technologies for its manufacturing based on 3D prototyping and printing, electric discharge processing as well as others. The very special attention is paid to Faydor Litvin, one of the founders of the gearing theory and non-circular gears, in particular. Non-circular gears were not widespread in the past, but this changed: increasingly becoming popularity leads to the creation of new machines. Finally, some examples of successful application of non-circular gears are shown.
