Abstract
The world has entered into the twenty-first century with an emerging and promising paradigm shift of industry 4.0. The era is witnessing swift changes that once science fiction has now become a reality owing to advances in technologies. Geography, through Geographical Information Systems (GIS), is uplifting science and society in ultimate, persistent, and enduring ways. Geospatial technology is one of the emerging technologies that go hand in hand with the industrial 4.0 revolution. With the rise of the Internet of Things, disruptive technologies, fast connectivity, cloud computing, and remote sensing, the geospatial sector has also been accelerated. So, geospatial professionals and individuals must be aware of these progressions for sustainable development. Therefore, the current chapter emphasizes the importance of GIS and its revolutions from traditional mapping to advanced real-time geospatial data analytics. The role of GIS in the planning of smart cities, 3D building design, business analysis, location intelligence, telecommunication, transportation, public education, health, and safety is highlighted. From the earth’s land use and resource perspective, the impact of GIS is described in analyzing land information, natural resource management, disaster administration, agricultural monitoring, and environmental assessment. Finally, the chapter discusses GIS contributions to the portal, open data, and citizen engagement in the context of sustainable development.
