Challenging Global Dislocation Through Local Community and Ritual

Coping Rituals in Fearful Times

Abstract

This chapter presents a radical rethink of the nature and healing of addictions. Individual consumption of alcohol and illicit drugs is but a small portion of a vast range of addictions, including the lust for power and wealth that are built into modernity itself. These addictive behaviours represent an unquenchable quest to survive in a fragmented and dislocated society. Social and spiritual life can be sustained by attending to vital needs for belonging and meaning with routines and rituals that structure life. With force and imagination, the whole vicious cycle must be challenged to reshape society into functioning communities.
