Abstract
The aim of this chapter is to make a prospective analysis of different designs of the metro and rail of Kolkata. To achieve this, we analyse the impacts of the planned rail and metro networks and propose a different design that might avoid urban sprawl and improve the competitiveness of the city. We conclude that a network polarized in the old centre and connected to both the port and airport will improve the competitiveness and efficient employment of the metropolitan area. On the other hand, the promotion of new towns, although more attractive for middle-class residents and land speculators, will increase the gentrification of the region, reduce the environmental sustainability and hurt the competitiveness of the city within both the Bengal Area and the country.
