Abstract
This chapter discusses the importance of ritual activities in general in social life, relating knowledge of rituals to anthropological methods of fieldwork and participant observation. The chapter situates the individual essays by contributors in relation to one another and with an overall emphasis on the interplay between continuity and change in rituals over time.
