Abstract
Although the treatment of culture is often central to ESOL education for adult immigrants, the concept of interculturality is absent almost entirely from adult ESOL literature. This chapter recommends that adult educators integrate the theory and language of critical interculturality. Critical interculturality incorporates insights from critical pedagogy and the decolonial turn, which force us to problematise the assumption that culture is a thing to be taught and learnt. In order to establish a baseline of how culture is approached in the adult ESOL classroom, this chapter examines the treatment of culture in popular coursebooks. It then discusses some of the theoretical implications that interculturality has for adult ESOL. A final section shares some practices to cultivate critical interculturality in the adult ESOL classroom.
