Abstract

Situations that promoted the distortion of facts at different moments in history demonstrate important aspects and arguments for a discussion on the theme of “disinformation”, in the context of Information Science. A debate is proposed on initiatives and measures that can help raise people’s awareness, improving their training for choosing and using information in different situations, notably on social networks. This chapter aims to discuss possibilities and studies that can help to halt the spread of false news on social media and a culture of disinformation. As a way of coping with the problem, the authors suggest the adoption, as a reference, of the concepts of Digital Literacy and Information Skills (CoInfo).
