Abstract
There were several hypotheses about the physical nature of X-rays. Because of their presumed relationship to cathode rays and their interpretation by Helmholtz as longitudinal electromagnetic shock waves in the context of Maxwell’s theory, Röntgen gave the following explanation of the physical nature of X-rays at the end of his first publication:
