Abstract

Social patterns, cultural specificity or political constraints determined two different perspective regarding gender issues: an occidental one—with a pro-active engagement of women—and an Eastern one—with a declarative reform of women status. In this chapter we propose a theoretical approach of the actual gender political representation in Romania and European Union. The historical path of the Romanian case may help us to understand under-representation phenomenon of women in politics that we are facing in the last three decades. Our chapter looks for an coherent presentation about the terminology and some actions entitled to represent the position of the European Union regarding the gender equality. We state for a European Common Policy when it is about gender equality in legislative and government political presentation which may help states like Romania to assume a pro-active engagement in fulfilling the gender equality objective.
