Abstract
This paper presents the essentials of Peirce’s original theory of abductive reasoning. It explains the differences between the first phase of Peirce’s thinking on abduction, in which the logical framework is largely syllogistic, and the mature phase, in which abduction becomes the first step in the three-step process of scientific inquiry. The problems of the validity of abductive reasoning and that of the methodology of abductive reasoning are also briefly discussed.
