Abstract

This chapter provides an overview of the current state of the art on sustainable development, which includes an analysis of the various definitions and the current status of implementation. It also offers an outline of the many challenges faced when implementing sustainable development. It concludes by outlining some trends and themes that will probably guide the future evolution of the topic within a 2050 perspective.
