Abstract
One way to strengthen the international community and its capacity has been to give more influence to regions around the world. This chapter, published in 2015, builds on an analysis of the 31 regional organizations that have peace and security on their agenda. The UN Charter anticipated the emergence of regional organizations by including them in Chapter VIII. Thus, Peter Wallensteen outlines a “balance sheet” of the advantages and disadvantages for states of using global or regional peace making.

This had actually been the case of a considerable period of time, see Heldt/Wallensteen (2006). However, the UN procedures were often a model for the operations by other organizations.
