Abstract

“Moral Critiques to Religion” This is the first of three chapters in which the author focuses on problems caused by religious dogma. In this chapter, Lorkowski turns to common religious themes that lead to pernicious morality. However, to avoid stereotyping or overgeneralizing religion, the author first distinguishes the forms of religion more likely to cultivate bad morality—those that focus on belief over action and those that allow only one correct religion or one correct path to the ultimate. After doing so, Lorkowski then briefly discusses the kinds of actual, historical harm that religious dogma has caused before isolating the major contributors that must be avoided—intolerance, fanaticism, textual fundamentalism, and a focus on principles other than morality.
