Abstract
Pneumonia is a lung infection involving the alveoli and can be caused by a variety of microbes including bacteria, viruses, and fungi. It is the leading infectious cause of hospitalization and death in the United States (Peters-Golden M. Chapter 15: Pneumonia. In: Schraufnagel DE, Breathing in America: diseases, progress, and hope. American Thoracic Society; 2010. https://www.thoracic.org/patients/patient-resources/breathing-in-america/resources/breathing-in-america.pdf). In 2016, in the United States, pneumonia resulted in 1.7 million visits to the emergency room and accounted for 15.1 deaths per 100,000 population in 2017 (FastStats. Pneumonia. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. 2020. www.cdc.gov/nchs/fastats/pneumonia.htm Accessed May 2020.). Every year, pneumonia kills an estimated 1.4 million children under the age of 5 years, accounting for 18% of all deaths of children under 5 years old worldwide (Emerging Infectious Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Pneumonia. www.cdc.gov/pneumonia. Accessed May 2020; Is the leading cause of death in children. World Health Organization. https://www.who.int/maternal_child_adolescent/news_events/news/2011/pneumonia/en/. Accessed May 2020. Pneumonia.).
