Abstract
Bioengineering is a relatively young field that combines the knowledge of living systems with engineering principles. It is often applied in medicine and the life sciences when it is then called “biomedical engineering.” Forms of biological engineering can also be applied in other areas such as agriculture, food, pharmaceutical development, and the environment. The term “bioengineering” was first coined in the 1950s. Biomedical engineering is specifically applied to the engineering of cells, genetic materials, and genetic tissues and is controversial. Genetic engineering has long been a subject of ethical debate.
