Abstract

Although the era of official colonization of Africa, Asia, North and South America, and Oceania by Western and European powers concluded in the last half of the twentieth century, the church remains mired in this project. Ecclesial discourse, doctrinal and theological, and relationships with indigenous peoples have been shaped by this colonial history. Blessed Pierre Claverie, OP (1938–1996) offers Christians an example of how to live an authentic Christianity in a new postcolonial paradigm. This changed reality––historical, cultural, and political––while extrinsic to the church provides the impetus for a change in the life of the church.
