Abstract

This chapter presents global perspectives on psychiatric education, focusing on how to bridge pedagogical disparities in underserved areas of the world. The chapter is organized by providing historical background information, discussing the importance of the biopsychosocial model, considering the impact of culture and stigma on education, describing evolving educational strategies that incorporate technological advances, and providing a specific review of medical student undergraduate and resident/trainee graduate education, as well as continuing education of early career psychiatrists. The authors, who are experienced educators from four continents, offer recommendations for the evaluation of clinical skills of trainees and faculty supervisory skills. They discuss innovative pedagogical strategies and international collaborations to maximize the educational experiences of medical students and psychiatric trainees throughout the world.
