Abstract

The concept of green buildings has become the vanguard in the journey toward sustainable development in the construction industry. The purpose of green buildings is to promote structures that use less energy, water, and materials throughout their life cycle while benefiting the environment and promoting occupants’ health and well-being. In simple terms, green buildings increase resource efficiency while sustaining natural resources for the future and minimizing the environmental and human impacts. Green building associations and councils have been established to encourage sustainable development in the industry. This chapter aims to provide insights into the benefits and challenges of green buildings besides analyzing different green rating systems adopted globally. Specifically, the characteristics of BREEAM, LEED, Green Star, DGNB, and CASBEE and their remarks were provided. This also highlights the essential criteria, including the indoor environment, energy consumption, and materials, which are all available in those systems. To speed up green building development, incentives should be provided for stakeholders due to the cost premium of construction. Awareness of sustainability and skills are also the key risk factors that should be addressed.
