Abstract

Socioeconomic development is crucially aimed for in the current global economy. Humans tended to be left aside for centuries. So did sustainability as the natural precondition of humankind’s survival, whereas in purely economic measures, society is evolving at an incredible rate and development disparities between countries are widening. This one-sidedness is dangerous, humankind states via United Nations. Therefore, the United Nations Human Development Index (HDI) was invented. The HDI shows the calculation of a country’s well-being, using several dimensions (education, health, and quality of life). The sustainability and well-being of countries and individuals are interconnected. This contribution provides a theoretical overview of what the HDI is, its advantages and limitations, and how it can be connected to the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals.
