Abstract
Sport often reflects the relevant social interchanges of a given time. This has provided the foundation to study sport in a variety of contexts, including sociological. Social frameworks in sport settings illustrate the interconnectedness between sport and all aspects of society. As a result of a changing climate on Earth, increasing instances of environmental issues have also become significant sociological concerns, namely as they affect sport. This chapter unpacks sport ecology, the reciprocity between sport and the natural environment, specific to the events sector of the sport industry. Then, we discuss a range of the sport events sector’s environmental impacts as well as conditions of the natural environment-affecting sport events. We also present the spectrum of climate vulnerability and adaptation in sport and conclude with recommendations guided by the United Nations’ Sport for Climate Action Framework.
