Abstract

Electrical discharge machining (EDM) is a very common method used in mould making with complex shape. The optimizing multi-objective process parameters and weight selection for each quality indicator in EDM is very complex. In the present study, an attempt has been made to perform multi-objective optimization in EDM using Taguchi - Preference selection index. Current (I), voltage (V), pulse on time (Ton) and pulse off time (Tof) has been considered as process parameters to optimize the performance measures such as material removal rate (MRR), tool wear rate (TWR) and surface roughness (Ra) under L25 Taguchi orthogonal matrix based experimental design. From the experimental investigation, the optimal process parameters on machining SKD11 steel has been identified as I (5 A), V (70 V), Ton (50 µs) and Tof (18 µs). It has also been observed that the proposed method can significantly reduce the experimental time and cost.
