Abstract
The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) constitute the core of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and aim to guide global, regional, and national development endeavors for the next 15 years. The Sustainable Development agenda builds on the success of the Millennium Development Goals to ensure sustainable social and economic progress worldwide. The third goal of this agenda is to “Ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages.” This chapter reviews health status in Jordan, in the context of SDGs, and provides baseline information on the three measures and indicators of the SDG. These data are important to monitor the progress of the country in achieving SDG 3. Jordan has steadily improved health standards through establishing a health system composed of hospitals, health centers, and medical schools. Although Jordan has realized great achievements in the health field, the country still faces many challenges to achieve the SDG 3 including increasing pressure on Jordan’s health system because of the influx of refugees from Syria, the lack of long-term data to observe the temporal evolution of the implemented indicators, and the lack of financial resources in Jordan to carry out and plan sustainable development. However, it is expected that Jordan will likely achieve a better health standard by 2030 if the country adheres to and monitors SDG targets.
