Abstract

The paper analyses the social changes taking place in Italy from a particular angle, that is, the passage of a society under a Catholic monopoly to one characterized by an unprecedented and unexpected religious diversity. The presence of a number of different places of worship from those of a typical Italian’s birth (Catholicism) shows how the new religious geography challenges the collective memory and the traditional symphony between political ruler and the Catholic church. It is a major novelty in a country that has always seen itself as Catholic. The paper reports the main outcomes of an empirical research on the Sikh, Muslim, Orthodox, Hindu, and Buddhist places of worship in Italy, and outlines the emergence of new religious minorities in Italy along with the historical presence of Protestant and Jewish communities.
