Abstract
This chapter discusses different ways in which the term “play” has been used and conceptualized. Starting from an etymological overview, it demonstrates how play was and is understood as an activity liberated from the constraints of necessity. Despite this “unserious” character, however, “play” may have implications for the possible future.
