Abstract
Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) is a rapidly advancing practice of systems engineering that employs descriptive system models as the foundation for knowledge capture and sharing within collaborative systems engineering teams throughout the system life cycle. Just as system developers are taking advantage of MBSE to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of system development processes, so also can acquisition organizations exploit MBSE to improve implementation of acquisition processes, enhance their engagement with suppliers responsible for system development, and facilitate the execution of full life cycle responsibilities for operating and sustaining the acquired systems. This chapter explores the MBSE problem space for acquisition. While some of the language and terms used are typical of US defense acquisition processes, the approach is applicable and valuable for any acquisition effort. It contrasts the unique characteristics of MBSE implementation by acquisition organizations with the more traditional MBSE implementation practices currently used by system developers.
