Abstract

During its first three decades of democracy, Spanish society underwent a profound cultural transformation that had broad social and political repercussions. The demands for democratization gave way to a modernizing project based on sophisticated consumption, depoliticization and individualistic hedonism. Mainstream media were essential actors in this process: they promoted a post-materialist change of sensibility that deproblematized the accelerated commodification of Spanish society. The economic and political crisis of 2008 has opened fissures in this media and cultural hegemony, although the chances of success for the antagonistic alternatives that have emerged are not yet clear.
