Abstract
This chapter examines the rise of small, online media outlets in Spain after the 15M Movement. Through a combination of interviews and analysis, the chapter argues that these outlets largely emerged thanks to two factors: the comparative lack of media outlets on the Left-wing of the political spectrum and hegemony of El País, on the one hand, and the lack of reader confidence in established media, on the other. The chapter also focuses on how these new outlets have dealt with questions of financial sustainability, reader confidence, political identity, editorial independence, generational divide and cultural influence. The final part of the chapter explores why these new independent media in Spain are closely linked with the critical view of Spain’s Transition to democracy.
This chapter is partly based on the authors’ reporting for an article that appeared in The Nation magazine (Seguín & Faber).
