Abstract
This is a selective survey of technologies for the coordinated control of vehicles. The vehicles are connected: they may communicate with each other and with the infrastructure. Moreover, some vehicle planning and actuation functions are coordinated and automated, i.e., determined by on-board or (cloud-based) infrastructure processors. The entry emphasizes technologies that use communication to coordinate the movement of vehicles and deemphasizes developments that focus on autonomous driving. Hence, sensing, planning, and control technologies that are oriented to autonomous (driver-less) vehicles are not considered. The entry evaluates coordinated control technologies in terms of their contribution to greater safety, mobility, and efficiency of the US road transportation system. Safety benefits translate to reduced crash rates; mobility improvements lead to increased throughput of the road system; and higher efficiency means reduced energy consumption for a given pattern of traffic.
