Abstract
Space robotics enables humankind to pioneer the exploration and utilization of space. This article gives a general introduction to the science and technology of space robotics. First, the article defines space robotics, introduces some fundamental concepts and lists its foundational disciplines. Then, a key mathematical model is presented. Finally, a survey of the state of the art is given, together with a perspective on future developments and pointers to additional information. This article was written as a self-contained introduction. It is directed at space science and engineering students, new space researchers and practitioners, as well as at a broader audience interested in astronautics.
Opinions expressed in this article are solely the author’s and not those of any other parties.
