Abstract
The private security industry is a flourishing enterprise with over 20 million documented security officers (Evans, 2011), widely employed in both the private and public sectors. Although their primary task is to protect people and assets, their work profile is by no means limited to this. While many of their functions are very similar to those of police patrol officers, involving the maintenance of order in spaces frequented by the public, their role often extends to a wider regulation of social life according to the requirements of the private entities who hire them, based on commercial requirements.
