Abstract
Siderophores are low molecular weight, metal chelating compounds produced by microorganisms in iron limiting stress conditions. These are classified based on functional groups and the types of microorganisms producing them. Media with different chemical composition are designed for the production of siderophores. CAS agar media is widely used to detect and screen siderophore producers, while the quantification is done by CAS shuttle assays and modified microplate assay method. The typing of the siderophore into hydroxamate, carboxylate, and catechols can be determined by tetrazolium test, iron perchlorate test, Csaky assay, iron perchlorate test, Arnow’s test, and spectrophotometric test. Thin-layer chromatography and atomic absorption spectroscopy is applied for the characterization of purified siderophores.
